On the basis that nothing in the painting is accidental - obviously - I'm intrigued by the globe in the middle right, between Mary and the donkey, with what looks like two feet, cut off Ozymandias-style, on the top. What does it represent?

"The idols of Heliopolis tumble from their pedestals and lie in pieces on the ground as the Holy Family passes by.” I think the "globe" is one of the pedestals that Muñoz is referring to, and the two feet are those of a pagan idol - a sun god, perhaps? (Good to hear from you, Charles.)

Ah, thank you Nick. I did search around for analysis of this painting and the web signally failed. (Often couldn’t even agree on which painting to show me.). Good to see you here, and enjoyable and thought-provoking as ever to read.
